About the Lonely Isle
Over the years when I've told people the name of my domain name, I've had this
reaction more than once: "Why? That sounds so lonely."
I never thought of it that way until the first person said that comment! The
story behind 'The Lonely Isle' is in these two quotes:
"Therefore the loremasters of Men said that a Straight road must still be, for
those that were permitted to find it. And they taught that, while the new world
fell away, the old road and the path of the memory of the West still went on, as
it were a mighty bridge of flight (which were bent now as the world was bent),
and traversed Ilmen which flesh unaided cannot endure, until it came to Tol
Eressea, the Lonely Isle, and maybe even beyond, to Valinor, which the Valar
still dwell and watch the unfolding of the story of the world." ~
The Silmarillion, J.R.R.
Tolkien
"And after dinner the Magician did a
very useful and beautiful piece of magic. He laid two blank sheets of parchment
on the table and asked Drinian to give him an exact account of their voyage up
to date: and as Drinian spoke, everything he described came out on the parchment
in fine clear lines till at last each sheet was a splendid map of the Eastern
Ocean, showing Galma, Terebinthia, the Seven Isles, the Lone Islands, Dragon
Island, Burnt Island, Deathwater, and the land of the Duffers itself, all
exactly the right size and in the right positions." ~
Voyage of the Dawn Treader,
C.S. Lewis
I wanted to combine two of my favorite things, and
both C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien's writings featured a version on 'The Lonely
Isle', and it has been my home on the web ever since.
